VTV vs VOO

VOO holds the full S&P 500 — growth and value together. VTV holds only the large-cap value half of the US market, screening for stocks that look cheap on measures like price-to-book and price-to-earnings.

The practical effect is that VTV underweights or excludes the mega-cap growth names — the large technology companies — that dominate VOO.

In the growth-led markets of recent years, VOO has generally outpaced VTV because its technology giants drove returns. In value-led periods — such as parts of the 2000s — the ordering reverses and value outperforms.

VTV also tends to carry a higher dividend yield and lower valuation, which some investors prefer for income and as a hedge against growth-stock drawdowns.
